VIJHL Championship Finals – Game 1 – March 26
Campbell River 4 Victoria 0
Three goals in the second led the Campbell River Storm to a 4-0 victory over the Victoria Cougars Tuesday night at the Brindy. The Storm take Game 1 of the Championship finals.
Pearce Messer opened the scoring in the first after Damon Porter blocked a Carl Ewert blast from the point. The puck ended up on Messer’s stick and he went the distance snapping a quick shot that fooled Owen Sikkes.
Early in the second, Mike Dyck from behind the net feathered a perfect pass to Kyle Jennings banging his stick at the circle; Jennings made no mistake burying his shot. At the 14 minute mark, Owen Christensen on a ‘give and go’ with Darren Hards, made some nifty moves and picked up his own rebound from almost behind the net to make it 3-0.
The Storm capped off the scoring in the final minute of the second on a great individual effort from Davis Frank. He stole the puck just inside the Cougars blueline, went to the net and patiently waited to put a pass through the blue paint to a waiting Hards.
Despite the score, this was a hard fought, physically punishing game, accentuated by skilled performances, and some great defensive plays. The intensity meter was off the roof.
Just four minor penalties called with both sides going ‘oh-for’.
The Game Stars were Hards and Tyler Vanuden.
Game 2 is Thursday night (March 28) at the Arch, a 7pm start.
