Port Alberni 4 Oceanside 1
Leim Smith scored a goal and added two assists and was named first star while leading the Port Alberni Bombers to a 4-1 VIJHL win over the Oceanside Generals before 465 fans at Oceanside Place in Parksville Saturday.
Sean Richards added a pair of goals and was named third star, with Kai Verbrugge adding a single for the Bombers, who scored the game’s final four goals after Oceanside’s Jaxin Karst, who was the game’s second star, opened the scoring in the first period. The teams were tied 1-1 after the first period, and the Bombers led 3-1 after two.
Hunter Farrar made 53 saves in the Generals net, with Evan Grant blocking 28 shots to earn the win in goal for Port Alberni, which won their second straight game to open the season.
Saanich 1 Kerry Park 4
Carson Brown fired two goals to earn first star honours and lead the host Kerry Park Islanders to a 4-1 win over the Saanich Predators before 220 fans Saturday night in Mill Bay.
Ethan Barron saved 47 of 48 shots in the Islanders net and was named third star, as Kerry Park led 1-0 after the second frame, following a scoreless first. Rylan Davis and Bryce Burnett into an empty net rounded out the scoring for the hosts.
Tarik Borhot had the lone marker for the visitors, and Jaden Vanderlee made 29 saves in the Predators net. Jacob Bernardo of Saanich was second star of the game.
Campbell River 6 Comox Valley 0
Second star Kaeden Serpa kicked out 26 shots to earn the first shutout of the VIJHL season as the Campbell River Storm blanked the hometown Comox Valley Glacier Kings 6-0 Saturday night.
Glacier Kings netminder Aaron Pichette was named the first star and blocked 44 of 50 shots in the game, in which Campbell River led 2-0 and 3-0 by periods.
Wyatt Dumont, Theo Landry, Sheldon Alexander, Jan-Felix Faupel, Jacob Kulas and Levente Birta were the Storm marksmen, while Kai Williams chipped in two assists.
