VIJHL Game Summary – September 6, 2024

Oceanside 2 at Saanich 1

Hunter Farrer stopped 49 of 50 shots and earned First Star honours as the visiting Oceanside Generals edged defending champion Saanich Predators 2-1 at George Pearkes Arena Friday night.

Oceanside never trailed in the contest, as Roman Lavery opened the scoring in the first period and Kadin Bilajnbegovic made it 2-0 in the third before Tarik Borhot cut the lead in half to break the shutout. Jaden Vanderlee made 25 saves in the Saanich net and was named the game’s second star.

Lake Cowichan 2 at Campbell River 4

Kai Williams and second star Jacob Kulas each had a goal and an assist as the hometown Campbell River Storm doubled the Lake Cowichan Kraken before 707 fans at Rod Brind’Amour Arena.

Beckett Trado and Levente Birta also tallied for the hosts, which never trailed in the game, with the first period ending in a 1-1 tie and the Storm leading 2-1 after two frames. Wyatt Dumont of Campbell River had an assist was named the game’s first star.

Brady Croft and Charles Fleming were the Kraken marksmen, with Croft, the game’s third star, assisting on the Fleming marker. Lake Cowichan goalie Myles Gordon blocked 33 shots while Kaeden Serpa made 27 saves in the Campbell River cage.

Westshore 2 at Peninsula 3 (OT)

First star Joe Marranzino scored his second goal of the night at 3:52 of overtime to give the Peninsula Panthers a 3-2 opening night win at their Panorama Arena in Sidney.

Third star Lukas Prewada opened the scoring in the first frame for the Panthers, before Jackson Campbell in the first and Thomas Hoshal in the second pushed the Wolves ahead 2-1 after two periods. Marranzino’s first goal came with just 43 seconds left in the third period to send the game into overtime.

Dryden Demelo stopped 44 shots in the Westshore cage and was named second star of the game, with Merik Grinaker finishing with 18 stops for the Panthers.
