Port Alberni 5 Saanich 0
First star Owen Ditzel scored twice and goalie Damien Knackstedt turned in an 18 save shutout to earn second star acknowledgment to led the Port Alberni Bombers to a 5-0 whitewash of the Saanich Predators in Friday night VIJHL action at George Pearkes Arena.
Port Alberni (22-11-4) led 2-0 after the first and second stanzas and had their other goals from John Sheilds, Zak Green and Leim Smith. Luke Ridgway was named the game’s third star.
Saanich (10-26-3) received a fine 51 save effort from goalie Asher Uniat.
Victoria 2 Campbell River 3 (OT)
Logan Vigneault deserved first star honours as he tied the game 3-3 with just one second left in the third period, then scored only 11 seconds into overtime to give the host Campbell River Storm claw out a 3-2 decision over the Victoria Cougars in front of 591 fans at Rod Brind’Amour Arena.
Dylan Toth opened the scoring in the first, giving Campbell River a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes, only to have Luke Reinhart and Aiden Beavan pop second period goals to give Victoria (18-14-6) a 2-1 lead heading intoi the final frame.
Victoria goalie Ryder Lally earned second star status with 50 saves in the Cougars cage, with third star Kaeden Serpa blocking 42 pucks for Campbell River (27-8-5) for 59 points and first place in the North Division.
Nanaimo 4 Lake Cowichan 1
Four straight Nanaimo goals, including two empty netters late in the third period, allowed the Buccaneers to overcome the host Lake Cowichan Kraken 4-1 at the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena.
Lake Cowichan led 1-0 in the second period on a goal from Laroslav Morozov before second star Preston Muxlow, Jaxin Karst, and empty net tallies from Baden Pazdzierski and Dylan Lamberto with first star, Kraken goalie Tanner Ferrill, who finished with 30 saves, on the bench for an extra attacker providing the margin of victory.
Buccaneers netminder Parker Ambury was named third star with a 26 save effort for Nanaimo (14-20-2-2), which is now three points back of third place Lake Cowichan (16-20-2-1) and Comox Valley in the middle of the North Division.
Kerry Park 7 Peninsula 3
Kerry Park Islanders scored five times in the sandwich frame to take over top spot in the South Division over Peninsula, thanks to a 7-3 win over the hometown Panthers as 198 spectators watched at Panorama Recreation Center.
Kerry Park moved into first place overall in the league with 60 points (28-6-3-1), one point up on Peninsula (28-7-2-1). They were led by first star Jacob Morrison’s pair of goals, two more from Brody Lindal, and singles coming off the sticks of Bode Pearson, Benjamin Stocks and Carson Brown as they turned a 1-0 first period deficit into a 5-2 advantage after two frames. Goalie Noah Stenvig was the third star on a 33 save effort, with Eric Stinson earning second star honours.
Scoring for Peninsula were Brendan Williams, Oskar Aitken Salmons and Carson Harris, with Merik Grinaker and Jacob Walsh splitting duties to finish with 36 saves in the Panthers cage.
