Campbell River 4 Peninsula 3 (OT)
Logan Vigneault scored at 3:37 of overtime to give the Campbell River Storm not only a 4-3 victory over the Peninsula Panthers, but top place in the North Division and a first round with Lake Cowichan Kraken in season ending VIJHL action Saturday night in front of 272 fans at the Panorama Recreation Centre.
Campbell River (31-12-5) climbed over second place Port Alberni Bombers by one point – 67-66 – with the decision. Port Alberni, which won its final six games, will face the Comox Valley Glacier Kings in round one, as both North Division semi-final match-ups were set on the final night of the regular season.
Storm goalie Kaeden Serpa was outstanding in stopping 41 shots and earned second star honours to lead the way for Campbell River, which also had goals from Dominic Grieco, Jordan Campbell and Draeden Bear as they led 1-0 and 3-2 by periods.
Alex Sajan, Kenyan Price and Jacob Caron were the Panthers marksmen, with Lucas Ananias with one helper and Oska Aitken Salmons with two assists taking first and third star honours respectively. Merik Grinaker and Hunter Farrer shared 28 shots in the net for Peninsula, who will take on Westshore Wolves in the first round of the South semi-final.
Saanich 1 Comox Valley 4
A huge crowd of 698 was on hand at the Comox Valley Sports Centre to cheer on the Glacier Kings in their 4-1 victory over the Saanich Predators which gave Comox Valley (21-24-3) third place in the North Division and a first round series against Port Alberni.
First star Ryan Harris had two goals and an assist and third star Mason Windsor and Tegan Clayton had one apiece for the hosts, who led 3-1 heading into the third after the first frame ended in a 1-1 tie. Netminder Aaron Pichette stopped 33 shots for the win.
Von Parsons had the lone goal for the Predators, with goalie William Rose stopping 50 shots in a second star performance.
Lake Cowichan 0 Oceanside 4
First star Josh Nuttall turned in a 38 shot shutout to help the Oceanside Generals march past the Lake Cowichan Kraken 4-0 as 564 spectators looked on at Oceanside Place.
Second star Ryken Lay with two and third star Jackson Bostock and Billy Snyder with one apiece scored for Oceanside,
Lake Cowichan (19-25-3-1) had 24 stops from goalie Hayden Lovell and will now face North Division winning Campbell River in the first round of the playoffs.
Victoria 4 Kerry Park 6
Carson Brown had two goals, was named the first star, and hit 100 points with an empty netter with 1:43 left in the third period to win the VIJHL scoring race and lead the league champion Kerry Park Islanders to a 6-4 win over the Victoria Cougars in front of 143 fans at Kerry Park Arena.
Third star Adam Konowalchuk had a goal and two assists, with other tallies coming from Nate Grinevitch, Colby Robinson and Benjamin Stocks as Kerry Park jumped to a 3-0 first period lead before Victoria roared back to knot the count at 4-4 heading into the final stanza. Noah Stenvig stopped 26 shots to pick up the win.
Cougars cage guarder Jesse Pye was named second star with a 46 save effort, and Victoria’s goals came from Mathieu Sauve with two, Austin Garrett and Tarik Borhot with one apiece.
The game was a preview of their upcoming first round South Division semi-final, as Kerry Park finished 37-7-3-1 for 78 points and will face Victoria 25-17-6 for 56 points starting this week.
