Beckett Trado’s goal at 6:15 of overtime lifted the hometown Campbell River Storm to a 5-4 win over the Port Alberni Bombers before 521 fans at Rod Brind’Amour Arena in Sunday night VIJHL action.
Brado was named first star in the game, which Port Alberni led 2-1 and 3-1 by periods. Koehn Obuck, Sheldon Alexander, Holden Smith and Dominic Grieco also scored for the Storm, which scored three times in the third period to send the game into overtime. Second star Henry Davis added two assists for Campbell River, with netminder Kaeden Serpa stopping 31 shots in the Storm net to earn third star honours. Campbell River stretched their lead atop the North Division over Port Alberni by four points, as the Storm has 23 points at 11-4-1. Alberni is in second place with 19 on a 9-5-1 record.
Daniel Bechter scored twice and Jaxon Hinchey and Jack Barrett added one apiece for the Bombers, who received a 38 save effort from Damien Knackstedt.
Peninsula 4 Lake Cowichan 1
Peninsula Panthers leapt back into first place in the South Division with a 4-1 win over the host Lake Cowichan Kraken in front of 154 people at the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena.
Leo Therien, Alex Sajan, Carson Harris and Kenyan Price were the marksmen for the Panthers, who after a scoreless first period, led 3-1 after two frames to push their record to 11-1-2 for 24 points. Alexei Booth was named second star with 26 saves in the Panthers net.
Tanner Ferrill was outstanding in the Kraken cage, blocking 47 of 50 shots to earn first star honours in the game, with Lake Cowichan’s lone tally coming from the game’s third star, Laroslav Morosov. The Kraken sits in fifth place in the North with 8 points.
