First star Noah Gebicki had three goals as the host Westshore Wolves jumped out to a 5-0 lead and bested the Victoria Cougars 9-4 Wednesday night before 162 fans at the Q Centre.
Single goals came from Kansys Seney, Keagan Dyer, Alejandro Snead and Zion Lavoie, with second star Jackson Campbell and third star Sam Spring adding a goal and two assist each for the Wolves, with Dryden Demelo making 36 stops in the Westshore goal.
Victoria marksmen were Nick Scott, Kyler Smith, Carter Zeeben and Tyler Delli-Carri, as the Cougars trailed 4-0 and 5-1 by periods. Jesse Pye and Lane Maarhuis combined to make 26 saves in the cats cage.
Lake Cowichan 1 Port Alberni 9
Port Alberni won their fifth straight game to open the VIJHL season Wednesday night by bombing the visiting Lake Cowichan Kraken 9-1 before 290 fans at the Alberni Valley Multiplex.
The hometown, North Division leading Bombers scored three goals in each period. Elliot Kuprash had three goals, with Jaxon Hinchey, McCall Nault, Grayson Salmon, Kash Nicklin, Solstice Tennant and Nathan Hayes scoring singles. Aleksander Leonelli had the lone marker for the Kraken, who had Myles Gordon make 38 saves on the night.
Evan Grant blocked 27 of 28 shots to earn the win in the Bombers cage.
