Kerry Park 2 Port Alberni 1 (OT)
Matson Waring’s unassisted goal at 5:38 of overtime gave the visiting Kerry Park Islanders a 2-1 win over the Port Alberni Bombers in front of 296 fans at the Alberni Valley Multiplex in Friday night VIJHL play.
After a scoreless first period, Carson Brown gave the Islanders the lead before Kai Verbrugge’s marker tied the game at 1-1 in the second period. Ethan Taylor stopped 39 shots in the Kerry Park net and was named first star, with Evan Grant blocking 32 pucks for the Bombers to earn second star honours. Daniel Betcher had an assist for Port Alberni and was the game’s third star.
Kerry Park is now 14-4-1 in third place in the South Division, with Port Alberni, at 14-5-3, in second in the North with 31 points.
Oceanside 1 Comox Valley 3
Comox Valley Glacier Kings scored twice in the third period to ice the Oceanside Generals 3-1 at the Comox Valley Sports Centre.
First star Rolan Amin, Suhaan Nagra with the eventual winner and Zaya Morro into an empty net were the goal scorers for Comox Valley, who had a stellar 34 save effort from third star netminder Brayden Pritoula.
Jackson Bostock scored the Generals goal, as second star Hunter Farrer made numerous larcenous saves in a 38 save performance, including a scintillating glove hand grab of a one-timer in tight that left the crowd gasping and the Oceanside forward shaking his head. Comox Valley moved to 8-12-2 on the season, and Oceanside is at 2-16-2.
Campbell River 5 Lake Cowichan 2
Campbell River Storm jumped out to a 3-0 lead and had two goals from first star Dylan Toth as they defeated the Lake Cowichan Kraken 5-2 at the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena.
The North Division first place Storm, now 14-4-4 for 32 points, led 1-0 and 4-1 by periods and received single makers from Dominic Grieco, Jan-Felix Faupel and Marshall Curri, along with a 26 save effort from second star, goalie Kaeden Serpa.
Second star Charles Fleming and Nicolas Kalinocka scored for the Kraken, who had 27 saves from goalie Ayden Fenske. Lake Cowichan is 6-14-2.
Saanich 2 Peninsula 8
First star Ben Swan and second star Ethan Lingard each scored twice to lead the Peninsula Panthers to an 8-2 decision over the Saanich Predators in front of 183 fans at the Panorama Recreation Centre.
Third star Jacob Caron, Carson Harris, Malcolm Fletcher and Lucas Ananias were the other goal scorers for Peninsula, which has still only lost one regulation game atop the South Division on a 17-1-2 record for 36 points that leads the entire VIJHL. Merik Grinaker made 26 stops in the Panthers cage.
Nick Scott had both goals for the Predators, who had a 41 save effort from netminder Ty Tanton and now stands at 6-15-2.
