Port Alberni 4 Oceanside 1
A trio of third period goals propelled the Port Alberni Bombers to a 4-1 victory over the Oceanside Generals in Sunday VIJHL play at Oceanside Place, watched by 312 spectators.
Owen Ditzel, Jack Barrett, Sean Richards and Kai Verbrugge into an empty net were the goal scorers for Port Alberni (21-11-4), with Grayson Salmon earning third star honours with two assists and Damien Knackstedt stopping 18 shots on goal.
Ryken Lay was the game’s first star and was the lone scorer for Oceanside (7-25-3), who trailed 1-0 at the end of the first and second frames and received a 40 save effort from second star, netminder Josh Nuttall.
Lake Cowichan 6 Nanaimo 5 (SO)
Cooper Barclay had a goal and the shootout winner as the visiting Lake Cowichan Kraken crawled over the Nanaimo Buccaneers 6-5 in an extra time contest viewed by 315 fans at Nanaimo Ice Centre.
A 53 save effort from goalie Tanner Ferrill, named the game’s second star, helped Lake Cowichan (14-20-2-1) open up a two point lead in fourth spot in the North Division with 31 points, two up on Nanaimo (13-19-1-2) with 29 points, although they have two games in hand.
Bevin Williams had two goals and Gellert Kiss-Molnar and Kananga Mangala one apiece for Lake Cowichan, which, after a 1-1 first period, led 3-1 heading into the third period, when Nanaimo scored four times.
First star Baden Pazdzierski, Bodie Coburn, Bostyn MacDonald, Jaxin Karst and Kenneth Boychuk dented the twine for the Buccaneers, and Casey Rutland was named the third star. Netminder Parker Ambury had 26 saves in the Bucs net.
Peninsula 2 Campbell River 5
Campbell River Storm had three goals from first star Beckett Trado, including one of two markers in the last two minutes of the game to take a 5-3 victory over the visiting Peninsula Panthers in a battle of Division leading teams in front of 517 fans at Rod Brind’Amour Arena.
Campbell River moved to 25-8-5 and 55 points atop the North, just two points back of South leading Peninsula, at 27-5-2-1 for 57 points, which has three games in hand.
The game was tied 1-1 after the first before the Storm surged to a 3-1 lead heading into the third, and had second star Kaeden Serpa turn in an outstanding 47 save effort between the pipes. Third star Jan-Felix Faupel and Logan Wright had the other Storm scores.
Lukas Preweda and Jacob Caron had the goals for Peninsula, with netminder Merik Grinaker making 24 saves in the game.
