Sept. 26: Win Gets Kraken To Top Of North Division

Westshore 7 Saanich 3

First star Parker Atkinson scored three goals and added an assist to lead the Westshore Wolves to a 7-3 victory over the Saanich Predators in Friday night VIJHL action in front of 135 spectators at George Pearkes Arena.

Atkinson took over the league scoring lead with 21 points as Westshore led 2-0 and 6-3 by periods. Jasper Fellbaum earned second star honours with a goal and a helper, with the other Wolves goals coming off the sticks of Kaden Ryan, Alejandro Snead and Linden Hoskins into an empty net. David Dvorak stopped 25 shots in the Wolves cage for the win.

Westshore jumped into first place in the South Division with 13 points on 8 games, although undefeated Peninsula Panthers have two games in hand with 12 points in 6 games.

Third star Shandon Riopel potted two goals and Elijah Kim one for the Predators, who had Jacob Walsh and George Jantz combine for 37 saves in the Saanich net.

Kerry Park 0 Victoria 9

Joseph Melichar popped a hat trick and two assists in the Victoria Cougars’ 9-0 blanking of the Kerry Park Islanders as 155 watched at Archie Browning Arena.

Melichar is now second in league scoring with 20 points, and he was joined on the scoresheet by second star Simon Semancik with four assists, third star Jacob Bernardo with two goals and an assist, and single markers from Haydyn Brooks, Luke Reinhart, Tyler Delli-Carri and Pierson Main as Victoria held 3-0 and 5-0 period leads. Netminder Lane Maarhuis recorded the shutout by making 14 saves.

Carter Puska stopped 29 shots in the Islanders net.

Comox Valley 2 Campbell River 4

Four straight goals sandwiched with opening and closing goals by the Comox Valley Glacier Kings helped the hometown Campbell River Storm to a 4-2 decision at Rod Brind’Amour Arena, where 711 took in the game.

First star Nicholas Condon had a goal and an assist, while Noah Spencer, Ryder Tanner and Lucas Beaudoin also scored as the hosts opened up a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes, following a scoreless first frame. Second star of the tilt was goalie Luc Gravel with a 34 save effort.

Cameron Collins and Kyle Mayenburg dented the twine for Comox Valley, and Zaya Morro had an assist and was named third star. Goalie Timothee Fengos finished with 37 saves.

Port Alberni 1 Lake Cowichan 4

Lake Cowichan Kraken amassed period leads of 1-0 and 4-0 and never trailed in their 4-1 decision over the Port Alberni Bombers at the Cowichan Lake Sports Centre.

Second star Toby Johnson, third star Addison Bradley, Nicolas Kalinocka and Diezel Wyton pumped in goals for the Kraken, and first star of the game was netminder Alfie Blakeley.

The Kraken took sole possession of top spot in the North Division with the win, and now sit at 5-1 for 10 points in 6 games.

Cole Campbell had the lone Bombers goal, and Ryan Burroughs and Joseph Naccarato shared the goaltending duties for Port Alberni.
