Sept. 19: 5-0 Shutout Pushes South Leading Peninsula To 5-0

Oceanside 4 Comox Valley 3

Ryken Lay’s second goal of the game, a shorthanded goal at 11:54 of the third period, gave the Oceanside Generals a 4-3 victory over the Comox Valley Glacier Kings at the Comox Valley Sports Centre in Friday night VIJHL action.

Lay was named first star of the contest, with second star Jacob Leamy, in his first game as a General following his trade from the Westshore Wolves, and Hunter Toth had the other goals for Oceanside in the contest that was tied 0-0 and 2-2 by periods. Goalie Ethan Suhr made 41 saves to earn the win in goal.

Suhaan Nagra, Westin Churchill and third star Leon Mikhalchuk, who added an assist, were the Glacier Kings marksmen, with Anthony Ganoung stopping 25 shots in the Comox Valley cage.

Kerry Park 2 Port Alberni 5

First star Kash Nicklin and second star Makhi Wandler each fired a goal and two assists to help the Port Alberni Bombers soar over the visiting Kerry Park Islanders as 404 watched at the Alberni Valley Multiplex.

Port Alberni led 2-0 and 5-1 by periods and also had tallies from Mason Smith, Ethan Unger and Joel Dorn, with netminder Xavier Hahn turning aside 32 shots to earn third star honours.

Benjamin Stocks and Hudson Closson scored for Kerry Park, who received a 50-save effort from Joshua Dubreuil between the Islanders pipes.

Lake Cowichan 0 Peninsula 5

First star Oskar Aitken-Salmons scored twice and third star Matus Volovar blocked all 18 shots he faced to earn the shutout as the Peninsula Panthers blanked the Lake Cowichan Kraken 5-0 with 124 spectators looking on at the Panorama Recreation Centre.

Brendan Williams, Carson Harris and Alex Sajan also dented the twine for the Panthers, who led 2-0 after the first and second frames and the defending champions improved their South Division leading record to 5-0.

Second star Evgeni Tkachenko was brilliant in the Kraken net with 52 saves.

Westshore 3 Campbell River 1

Goals by brothers Dylan and Linden Hoskins and 53 saves by first star James Hall helped the Westshore Wolves calm the hometown Campbell River Storm 3-1 in front of a crowd of 646 at Rod Brind’Amour Arena.

Kansys Seney had the other goal for Westshore, which led 1-0 after the first period before second star Jack Smith’s tally for Campbell River in the sandwich frame sent the contest into the third in a 1-1 tie.

Storm tender Luc Gravel earned third star honours with 31 saves.
