Oct. 3: Panthers Take Tilt Between South Division’s Two Top Teams

Victoria 5 Saanich 3

First star Joseph Melichar and second star Jordan Ramsay each had a goal and three assists to power the Victoria Cougars to a 5-3 decision over the Saanich Predators in front of 118 fans at George Pearkes Arena in Friday night VIJHL play.

Saanich led 2-1 after the first period but trailed 4-2 heading into the final frame, and had a standout effort from netminder George Jantz who finished with 38 saves and was named third star. Nicholas Wade, Konrad Lorincz and Travis Swanson had the Predators goals.

Victoria’s other tallies came from the sticks of Luke Reinhart, Jacob Bernardo and Simon Semancik with Jesse Pye picking up the win between the pipes with 22 stops.

Comox Valley 1 Campbell River 2

Second star Jack Smith’s goal at 2:16 of overtime gave the Campbell River Storm a 2-1 victory over the visiting Comox Valley Glacier Kings at Rod Brind’Amour Arena in front of a season high 1,010 spectators.

Luc Gravel was outstanding with 40 saves to earn first star honours for the Storm, who also had a goal from Ryder Tanner. After a scoreless first period, the teams entered the third period tied at 1-1.

Cohen Kallin scored for Comox Valley, with third star Anthony Ganoung finishing with 43 saves on the night.

Westshore 1 Peninsula 7

Peninsula Panthers led 3-0 and 5-0 by periods to upend the Westshore Wolves 7-1 in a battle of the South Division’s top two teams in front of 325 people at the Panorama Recreation Centre.

Third star Carson Harris with two tallies, and singles from first star Leo Therien, second star Lucas Ananias, Brendan Williams, Liam Byrne and Ethan Lingard were the goal scorers for Peninsula, who had 13 saves from goalie Caden Lentz.

Alejandro Snead scored the lone Westshore goal, and James Hall stopped 42 pucks for the Wolves, who suffered their first regulation loss of the year. They still lead Peninsula by 3 points in the South Division, although the Panthers have two games in hand.

Oceanside 4 Lake Cowichan 1

Stellar netminding from first star Andreas Bylerius who stopped 36 of 37 shots enabled the Oceanside Generals to march to a 4-1 victory over the Lake Cowichan Kraken at the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena.

Second star Brayen Newans, third star Ryken Lay, Jacob Leamy and Seth Corlazzoli had goals for Oceanside, which led 2-0 and 4-1 by periods.

Luke Bennett had the goal for the Kraken, with goalie Alfie Blakeley stopping 35 shots in the game.
