VIJHL leading scorer Joseph Melichar had two goals and an assist and was named first star while leading the Victoria Cougars to a 5-2 decision over the Nanaimo Buccaneers in front of 290 fans at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.
Ben Wetterberg and Jacob Bernardo and Jordan Ramsay on one-timers on the power play were the other scorers for Victoria (16-6-2), which had four power play goals led 1-0 and 3-1 by periods. Goalie Lane Maarhuis stopped 28 shots and was named second star.
Nanaimo (13-8-1) had goals from third star Madden Cruickshank and a seeing-eye top shelf snipe from Zach Spafford in the third period. Netminder Aaron Pichette finished with 35 saves.
