Nov. 20: Buccaneers Nip Wolves, Both Clubs Move To Top Of Their Division

 

Campbell River 3 Victoria 4 (OT)

League leading scorer Joseph Melichar scored his 19th goal of the season at 1:03 of overtime to give the Victoria Cougars a 4-3 victory over the Campbell River Storm in Thursday night VIJHL action at Archie Browning Arena.

Melichar had a goal and two assists and pushed his points total to 45 points in 21 games and was named first star in the tightly contested game, which was tied 0-0, 1-1 and 3-3 by periods. Carter Zeeben, Jacob Bernardo and Luke Reinhart had the other goals for Victoria, and Jordan Ramsay added an assist and was named third star. Lane Maarhuis picked up the win in goal with 27 saves.

Second star Jack Smith, Tom Marguet and Dylan Toth had the Storm markers, and netminder Mason Hillier finished with 34 stops.

Westshore 1 Nanaimo 2 (OT)

First star Madden Cruickshank scored an unassisted goal at 5:50 of overtime to lead the Nanaimo Buccaneers to a 2-1 decision over the Westshore Wolves as 205 watched at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.

Zach Spafford opened the scoring for Nanaimo in the first period, with the league’s second leading scorer Parker Atkinson replying for Westshore as the game was tied 1-1 after the first, second and third frames.

Second star Aaron Pichette was the winning goalie with 31 saves, and third star James Hall stopped 42 pucks in the Wolves lair.

Nanaimo (13-7-1) is in sole possession of first place in the North Division with 27 points, while Westshore (18-3-2) moved to the top of the South with 38 points.
