March 5: Cougars, Buccaneers Post 5-2 Victories

First star Ethan Davey’s hat trick powered the Victoria Cougars to a 5-2 victory over the Westshore Wolves and a 2-1 lead in their South Division series in Thursday night VIJHL playoff action watched by 302 spectators at Archie Browning Arena.

Victoria led 1-0 and 3-2 by periods and had their other goals from Cole Patterson and Grady Sluggett, with Ben Wetterberg taking second star honours and netminder Finn Wilson third star with his 26 save effort.

Kansys Seney and Tyson Schamehorn had the Wolves tallies, as goalie Owen Bonthuis finished with 33 stops.

Campbell River 2 Nanaimo 5

A four goal first period enabled the Nanaimo Buccaneers to post a 5-2 decision over the Campbell River Storm to take a 3-0 lead in their North battle in front of 375 fans at Nanaimo Ice Centre.

First star Nate Barclay, Tristen Bailey, Jaxin Karst, Casey Rutland and Kai Verbrugge scored for Nanaimo, which led 4-1 and 4-2 by periods, with second star Aaron Pichette finishing with 38 stops between the Bucs pins.

Tom Marguet and Dylan Toth had the Storm markers, and Luc Gravel was named third star for stopping all 18 shots he faced in relief of starter William Talbot, who had 10 saves in the visitors net.
