A pair of third period power play goals provided the margin of victory as the Victoria Cougars squared their first round South Division playoff series at a game apiece with a 3-1 win over the host Westshore Wolves in front of 218 fans at The Q Centre.
First star Ethan Davey had the eventual winner at 1:09 of the third, followed by Tyler Delli-Carri at 3:25, with second star Jordan Ramsay scoring the first Victoria goal in the second period that tied the score at 1-1. Finn Wilson stopped 25 shots to pick up the win in net.
Elijah Kim in the first period put Westshore up 1-0 in the first, and third star Owen Bonthuis blocked 35 shots in the Wolves lair.
Oceanside 3 Comox Valley 4
First star Ander Reyes was the difference maker with a 45 save performance to lead the Comox Valley Glacier Kings to a 4-3 win over the Oceanside Generals and a 2-0 lead in their North Division series at the Comox Valley Sports Centre.
Comox Valley led 1-0 and 3-2 by periods in the see-saw battle, with second star Westin Churchill, Leon Mikhalchuk, Rolan Amin and Easton Sangris dented the twine for the Glacier Kings.
Third star Hunter Toth, Max Boyle and Logan Duncan had the Oceanside tallies, and netminder Ethan Suhr finished with 21 saves.
Nanaimo 3 Campbell River 0
Aaron Pichette recorded his second straight shutout by making 25 saves in a first star performance to lead the Nanaimo Buccaneers to a 3-0 whitewash of the Campbell River Storm and a 2-0 lead in their North Division series as 518 spectators watched at Rod Brind’Amour Arena.
Nanaimo led 1-0 and 2-0 by periods and had their goals come from Curtis Freeman, Nate Barclay and Dylan Lazaroff.
Storm backstop William Talbot blocked 44 shots and earned third star honours, and Campbell River’s Thomas Curri was named second star.
Saanich 3 Peninsula 9
Peninsula Panthers jumped out to a 4-1 first period lead and never looked back to down the Saanich Predators 9-3 and take a 2-0 lead in their South series with 167 people taking in the contest at Panorama Recreation Centre.
Oskar Aitken-Salmons had a hat trick, Lucas Ananias a pair, and singles came from a pair each and singles from first star Liam Byrne, Koehn Obuck, Paco Hodgson and Carson Harris did the scoring for Peninsula, which led 4-1 and 6-3 by periods. Lukas Preweda had two assists and was named second star, and Matus Volovar finished with 18 saves between the Panthers pins.
Matthew Anderson, Brandon Smith and Koen Gauthier scored for the Predators, with goalie George Jantz stopping 39 shots on the night.
