First star Oskar Aitken-Salmons scored twice, including a second period shorthanded marker that was the eventual game winner and a third period insurance goal, leading the Peninsula Panthers to a 3-1 win over the Victoria Cougars to open up a 2-0 VIJHL South Division playoff final lead Saturday night as 268 watched at the Panorama Recreation Centre.
Brendan Williams opened the scoring for the Panthers, but Cole Patterson tied it for the Cougars as the first period ended in a 1-1 tie. Alex Sajan chipped in with two assists and was named second star and Dome Szongoth earned third star honours. Caden Lentz stopped 18 shots to earn the win in goal.
Finn Wilson blocked 30 shots in the Cougars cage.
Game three of the series goes Tuesday night at Archie Browning Arena.
Nanaimo 3 Comox Valley 3 (OT)
First star Dylan Lazaroff’s second goal of the game at 5:02 of overtime to give the Nanaimo Buccaneers a 4-3 victory over the Comox Valley Glacier Kings that tied their North Division final series 1-1 in front of a full house at the Comox Valley Sports Centre.
Both teams scored once in each period in the see-saw contest. Jaxin Karst and Nate Barclay had the Buccaneers markers, and Rhys Wilcox had two assists and was named third star.
Second star Quinten Harvie, Sheldon Alexander and Easton Sangris tallied for the hosts,.
Nick Kotai stopped 41 shots for Comox Valley, and Aaron Pichette 29 in the Nanaimo net.
Game three is Tuesday in Nanaimo.
