Jan. 22: Solid Defense Leads Cougars and Buccaneers To Victories

Finn Wilson blocked all 19 shots he faced and was named first star as the Victoria Cougars shut out the Comox Valley Glacier Kings 2-0 in Thursday night VIJHL action at Archie Browning Arena in Esquimalt.

The game was scoreless until the third period, when second star Joseph Melichar, the league’s leading scored the eventual game winner on a powerplay midway through the frame, and Tyler Delli-Carri capped the scoring into an empty net for Victoria (25-8-3 for 53 points, one point back of the Westshore Wolves who sit in second place in the South Division)

Lane Maarhuis earned third star status for making 25 saves against his former teammates between the Comox Valley pipes, as he was traded from the Cougars on the weekend. Comox Valley, at 18-15-4-1 for 41 points, is third in the North.

Kerry Park 1 Nanaimo 5

First star Tristen Bailey and second star Jaxin Karst both scored twice to spark the Nanaimo Buccaneers to a 5-1 victory over the Kerry Park Islanders at Nanaimo Ice Centre.

Nanaimo (24-10-1 for 49 points, two back of North Division leading Oceanside with two games in hand on the Generals) had its other goal from Jack Barrett and two assists from third star Kane Law, with Carter Puska stopping 18 shots for the win in net.

Reece Phillips had the lone marker for Kerry Park, which fell to 2-36 on the season, fifth in the South. Netminder Alex Doyer had a busy night, finishing with 59 saves.
