First star Maxime Simard’s third goal of the game with 37 seconds remaining in the third period gave the hometown Campbell River Storm a 6-5 victory over the Kerry Park Islanders as the VIJHL resumed play following the Christmas break Friday night in front of 676 fans at Rod Brind’Amour Arena.
Campbell River (16-16-1 for 33 points, fourth in the North Division) led 1-0 and 3-1 by periods until a wild seven-goal final frame, which included four goals from Kerry Park (2-31 for 4 points, fifth in the South Division).
Second star Tom Marguet, Elliott Turgeon and Dylan Toth had the other Storm scores, with Mason Hillier and Luc Gravel combining for 29 saves in the Campbell River cage.
Third star Benjamin Stocks, Reece Miyoshi, Wade Enger, Hudson Closson and Colby Robinson had the Kerry Park goals, and Joshua Dubreuil had 33 saves in the Islanders net.
Westshore 1 Lake Cowichan 2 (OT)
Third star Diezel Wyton scored at 4:55 of overtime to give the Lake Cowichan Kraken a 2-1 decision over the visiting Westshore Wolves at the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena.
Alfie Blakeley put in a first star effort with 50 saves to backstop the win for Lake Cowichan (10-19-1-1 for 22 points, sixth place in the North Division), who had their other goal come midway through the third period by Toby Johnson to force overtime.
Westshore (23-6-4 for 40 points, second place in the South Division) had Noah Gebicki open the scoring in the first period, and netminder Ander Reyes was named second star with a 21 save effort in the Wolves’ lair.
