Feb. 20: Bucs Take Division Leaders’ Tilt In Overtime; Panthers Clinch

Nanaimo 4 Peninsula 3 (OT)

First star Nate Barclay scored at 4:43 of overtime and earlier had two assists to give the Nanaimo Buccaneers a 4-3 decision over the Peninsula Panthers in a Friday night VIJHL battle between Division leaders in front of 155 fans at the Panorama Recreation Centre in Sidney.

Nanaimo (31-12-2 for 64 points, first in North) had a goal and two assists from second star Curtis Freeman and single markers from Dylan Lazaroff and Kai Verbrugge in the contest they never led until the extra time winner. Tanner Ferrill finished with 32 save in the Bucs net.

Peninsula (37-5-3 for 77 points, first in South) led 2-1 following the second period as the first frame was knotted at 1-1, and third star Caron Harris, Brendan Williams and Logan Barnes each scored. Goalie Matus Volovar had 23 stops between the Peninsula pins.

With the point, the Panthers clinched the South Division regular season title.

 

Victoria 8 Lake Cowichan 2

A hat trick from Simon Semancik and two tallies from Kelton Shinde led the way for the Victoria Cougars in their 8-2 triumph over the Lake Cowichan Kraken at the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena.

Victoria (34-8-3 for 71 points, second in the South) led 2-1 and 4-1 by periods and also had goals from Carter Zeeben, Grady Sluggett and Ethan Davey, with Jesse Pye turning away 12 pucks in the Cougars cage.

Lake Cowichan (14-28-1-1 for 30 points, sixth in the North) had their goals from Landon Morris and Iaroslav Morozov and goalie Evgeni Tkachenko had 43 saves and was named first star. Second star Viktor Dudenkov and third star Diezel Wyton each had an assist.

 

Kerry Park 1 Campbell River 9

First star Holden Smith scored twice to boost the Campbell River Storm to a 9-1 thumping of the Kerry Park Islanders as 578 people took in the contest at Rod Brind’Amour Arena.

The other scorers for Campbell River (25-19-1 for 51 points, fourth in the North) were Thomas Curri and Colby Driebergen with two each, and one apiece from second star Elliott Turgeon(who also added two assists), Ryder Tanner and Jack Smith. Mitchell Tyre turned aside 19 shots in the Storm goal and was named third star, with Luc Gravel stopping all three shots he faced while spelling him off.

Kerry Park (2-44 for 4 points) had their goal from Colby Robinson and Adam Ranger stopped an amazing 75 shots in the Islanders net.

 

Saanich 2 Westshore 9

First star Tyson Schamehorn had three goals and four points and second star Trace Anderson added two goals and five points as the Westshore Wolves pounded the Saanich Predators 9-2 in front of 108 fans at the Juan De Fuca Recreation Centre.

Westshore (32-9-4 for 68 points, third in the South) had their other goals from Kansys Seney, Elijah Kim, Shane Fillinger and Maxwell Hoey and they led 2-1 and 6-2 by periods. Third star Luca Vanzo had 35 saves in the game.

Saanich (8-33-3 for 19 points, fourth in the South) goals came from Brandon Smith and Travis Swanson and Asher Uniat had 29 stops between the Predators pipes.
