Lake Cowichan 1 Peninsula 9
South leading Peninsula closed in on clinching their Division as the Panthers sunk the Lake Cowichan Kraken 0-1 in the lone VIJHL game Sunday in front of 200 fans at Panorama Recreation Centre.
Peninsula (36-5-2 for 74 points) moved five points ahead of second place Victoria Cougars, who have four games left, with the Panthers holding a game in hand.
Third star Luke Christensen had two goals and an assist, first star Brendan Williams and second star Alex Sajan a goal and two helpers each, and the other goal scorers for Peninsula were Dome Szongoth, Lukas Preweda, Jacob Eddy, Jacob Caron and Paco Hodgson. The Panthers led 1-0 and 4-0 by periods and received 25 saves from goalie Caden Lentz.
Lake Cowichan (14-28-1-1 for 30 points, sixth in the North Division) had their lone goal from Kieran Prichett late in the third period, and Alfie Blakeley and Evgeni Tkachenko combined for 38 saves in the Kraken cage.
