Feb. 13: Bucs, Wolves, Panthers & Kraken Earn Friday Night Wins

Nanaimo 3 Saanich 2 (OT)

Second star Tristan Bailey’s second goal at 9:25 of overtime pushed the Nanaimo Buccaneers past the Saanich Predators in Friday night VIJHL play at George Pearkes Arena.

Nanaimo (30-11-2 for 62 points, first in the North Division) had their other goal from Zach Spafford with netminder Carter Puska stopping 30 shots enroute to being named third star.

Saanich (8-32-3 for 19 points, fourth in the South), which led 1-0 after the first period on a goal by Kaidin Halladay, had their other goal from Ashton Vine-Sullivan late in the third to tie the contest. The teams were deadlocked 1-1 after the sandwich frame. First star of the game was goalie George Jantz with 37 saves.

Westshore 4 Port Alberni 2

A three point night from first star Kansys Seney, including a goal and two helpers, helped the Westshore Wolves double the Port Alberni Bombers as 481 watched at the Alberni Valley Multiplex.

Westshore (31-9-4 for 66 points, third in the South) led 1-0 after the first period but the clubs were tied 2-2 heading into the third. The other Wolves markers were from second star Parker Atkinson, Sam Spring and Trace Anderson, and James Hall turned aside 28 shots to pick up the win between the Wolves wickets.

Port Alberni (15-26-3 for 33 points, fifth in the North) tallies came off the sticks of Malik Oliva and Troy Zajac, and backstop Joseph Naccarato finished with 34 saves. Ethan Unger had an assist and was named third star.

Peninsula 5 Campbell River 2

A three goal first period burst propelled the Peninsula Panthers to a 5-2 decision over the hometown Campbell River Storm in front of 379 spectators at Rod Brind’Amour Arena.

Peninsula (35-5-2 for 72 points, first in the South) had second star Carson Harris, Clayton Collier, Lukas Preweda, Jacob Eddy and Paco Hodgson dent the twin while they led 3-0 and 4-1 by periods. Matus Volovar picked up the victory with 39 saves.

Scoring for Campbell River (23-19-1 for 47 points, fourth in the North) were first star Ryder Tanner and Ethan Hill and Henry Davis was named third star. Luc Gravel and William Talbot shared goaltending duties and combined for 30 saves.

Kerry Park 2 Lake Cowichan 3

A pair of goals from Iaroslav Morozov, including the winner, gave the Lake Cowichan Kraken a 3-2 victory over the Kerry Park Islanders at the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena.

Lake Cowichan (13-27-1-1 for 28 points, sixth in the North) had their other goal from Toby Johnson and Alfie Blakeley stopped 25 shots in the Kraken cage in a game that was tied 1-1 after the first period and 3-2 after two, followed by a scoreless third.

Kerry Park (2-40 for 4 points, fifth in the South) had both its goals from Colby Robinson and Adam Ranger was busy, making 44 stops in the Islanders net.
