Feb. 11: Four Goal Third Period Helps Cougars Claw Past Wolves

First star Cohen Kallin scored the tying and winning goals in the second period to lead the Comox Valley Glacier Kings to a 4-3 win Wednesday night in VIJHL action in front of 335 spectators at the Alberni Valley Multiplex.

Comox Valley (21-15-5-1 for 48 points, third in the North Division) also had goals from Suhaan Nagra and Westin Churchill in the first period, which ended in a 2-2 tie. Ander Reyes picked up the win with 31 saves between the Yeti wickets.

Second star Jeremy Gould, Eduard Mishikov and Quinn Bouchard scored for the Bombers, and Kash Nicklin added two assists and was named third star. Goalie Ryan Burroughs made 45 saves for Port Alberni (15-24-3 for 33 points, fifth in North).

Victoria 4 Westshore 2

A four-goal third period lifted the Victoria Cougars to leap Westshore 4-2 and jump ahead of the Wolves in the South Division standings as 196 fans took in the heavyweight tilt at The Q Centre.

Victoria (31-8-3 for 65 points), jumped ahead of Westshore (30-9-4 for 64 points) and have played one less game than the Wolves.

After a scoreless first period, Shane Fillinger opened the scoring for the hosts, who led 1-0 heading into the final frame.

Ben Wetterberg tied the game on a power play at 57 seconds and Ethan Davey pulled Victoria ahead at 2:14, followed by Sam Spring’s goal for Westshore that knotted the score less than a minute later. Simon Semancik gave the Cougars the lead back, and Jacob Bernardo added an insurance marker late in the period on an impressive top-shelf one-timer on a cross-ice pass from Grady Slugget, with Jordan Ramsay also assisting on the play.

Finn Wilson stopped 31 pucks for the Cougars and Owen Bonthuis 29 in the Wolves net.
