Ex-Bomber Tung Signs With NHL Rangers
April 1, 2025 – Former standout Port Alberni Bombers goaltender Callum Tung has signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the National Hockey League’s New York Rangers.
Rangers President and General Manager Chris Drury announced the deal today, and Tung will report to the Hartford Wolf Pack on an amateur tryout (ATO) for the remainder of this season.
Tung was the Most Valuable Player on the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League Bombers in 2021-2022, and played a legendary playoff series against first place Campbell River, which the Storm won in seven games. Port Alberni was outshot by 268 shots in the series, and Tung saw an average of 64 shots per game, including 79 in a triple-overtime contest, and posted an outstanding .951 save percentage and a 2.49 goals against average while collecting three wins.
Tung played parts of two seasons with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs of the BCHL after playing with the Bombers, and the 6-3, 198-pound netminder from Port Moody appeared in 43 games and finished with a 24-15-2 regular season record, 2.87 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage. In the postseason, he contributed a 11-7-1 mark with a 2.16 goals-against average and a .939 save percentage.
Tung , 21, earned a scholarship with the NCAA Division I UConn Huskies (University of Connecticut), which plays in Hockey East, and posted a 10-4-1 record, 2.01 goals-against average, and .933 save percentage in 15 games to lead UConn to their first-ever NCAA Tournament. Tung finished his lone season at UConn with the 6th-best save percentage among collegiate goaltenders, 12th best goals-against average, and tied for the 13th best win percentage (.700).
His save percentage ranked second among Hockey East goaltenders and his goals-against average ranked third. In addition, Tung allowed two or fewer goals in 11 of his 15 appearances this season.
