Lake Cowichan 1 at Comox Valley 2
Zaya Morro’s goal at 11:18 of the third period lifted the Comox Valley Glacier Kings to a 2-1 over the Lake Cowichan Kraken in a goaltenders’ duel Friday night in VIJHL action at the Comox Valley Sports Centre.
Anthony Ganoung stopped 26 shots in the Glacier Kings net to earn first star honours and second star Evgeni Tkachenko stopped 35 for the Kraken in the tight contest, which Comox Valley (13-13-2-1) led 1-0 after the first period, but Lake Cowichan (8-18-0-1) tied 1-1 in the second.
Sheldon Alexander had the other goal on a first period power play and Landen May was named third star for the Glacier Kings, which holds third place in the North Division, and Landy Johnson replied for the Kraken.
Port Alberni 1 Campbell River 7
Campbell River Storm had a goal and two assists from first star Elliott Turgeon and rode the goaltending of second star Matthias Hasselmann’s 37 saves in his VIJHL debut to a 7-1 win over the Port Alberni Bombers in front of a season high 1,017 spectators at Rod Brind’Amour Arena.
Campbell River (13-16-1) never trailed, holding 1-0 and 5-0 by periods, and had their other goals from third star Holden Smith with the game opener, Hudson Davidson, Ryder Tanner, Ethan Hill, Thomas Curry and Reece Phillips.
McCall Nault had the lone Bombers marker, and Joseph Naccarato and Ryan Burroughs split 34 saves between the pipes for Port Alberni (11-17-1), which now trails fourth place Campbell River by four points in the North Division.
Saanich 3 Peninsula 11
First star Brendan Williams fired three goals and second star Oskar Aitken-Salmons had two goals and three assists to spark the Peninsula Panthers to an 11-3 decision over the Saanich Predators as 302 watched at the Panorama Recreation Centre.
After a 3-3 first period tie, South Division leading Peninsula (26-1-1 for 53 points) pounced with six scores in the second stanza to take control of the game. Carson Harris added three assists and earned third star honours, and the other Panthers goals came from Jacob Caron, Markus Nichols, Clayton Collier, Lucas Ananias, Luke Christensen and Ben Rowan. Caden Lentz stopped 19 shots to record the win in goal.
Saanich (6-22) scorers were Von Parsons with two and Koen Gauthier added one, with netminders Jacob Walsh and Asher Uniat combining to make 53 stops.
