Dec. 11: Cougars Calm Storm, Bucs Ground Bombers

Three late third period goals enabled the Victoria Cougars to take a 6-4 win over the Campbell River Storm in a see-saw Thursday night VIJHL contest in front of 160 fans at Archie Browning Arena.

Victoria led 2-1 and 3-2 by periods and were led by first star Grady Slugget with two goals and an assist, second star Jordan Ramsay with a goal and two assists, and a tally each from third star Haydn Brooks, who also had an assist. Pierson Main and Brandon Smith also scored for Victoria (20-7-2), and Jesse Pye made 27 saves for the win in goal.

Elliott Turgeon with two and Tom Marguet and Dylan Toth with one apiece had the goals for the Storm (12-16-1) Goalie Luc Gravel finished with 22 saves.

Nanaimo Buccaneers jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead and never trailed while besting the Port Alberni Bombers 4-2 as 330 fans took in the contest at Nanaimo Ice Centre.

Nanaimo’s goals came off the sticks of first star Porter Williamson, Boston Cripps and Nate Barclay and Zach Spafford. Aaron Pichette made 32 saves in net and was named third star for the Bucs (17-9-1), who are in second place in the North Division, two points back of the Oceanside Generals.

Port Alberni markers were recorded by Carter Davidson and McCall Nault. Goalie Joseph Naccarato stopped 64 shots in the contest and earned second star honours. The Bombers are 11-16-1 on the season and in fifth spot in the North.
