VIJHL ADOPTS NEW PLAY-OFF FORMAT
- Submitted by

The VIJHL regular season is heading down the stretch and the final push is getting even more frantic this season with the new play-off format adopted by the league governors earlier in the season. Gone is the Wildcard game along with the divisional playdowns. The new ‘1 versus 8’ format gets underway starting the week of February 19.

The top 8 teams in the league will be seeded according to their final total points in the overall standings with the Andy Hebenton Award winner (1st place team) facing the 8th place team (2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, 4 v 5) in the first round of the playoffs; the VIJHL Quarterfinals.

This is a departure from previous years in which the 8th and 9th place teams faced each other in a single game knockout (Wildcard) game to determine which team would be seeded 4th in the North and gain entry into the playoffs. Each division then proceeded to a 1 v 4, 2 v 3, play-off format with the eventual divisional champions meeting in the VIJHL Championship series.

All play-offs series in the VIJHL are best-of-7 affairs. The first VIJHL team to get 12 post-season wins will take home the Brent Patterson Memorial trophy and stamp their ticket to the Cyclone Taylor Cup in Richmond.

REID WHEELDON
Campbell River Storm

Reid Wheeldon plays a hard physical game. In Week 6, he was physical, disciplined and productive. Saturday his 3 point performance helped propel the Storm to a 6-4 win over Kerry Park. Friday against the Cougars, he delivered some big hits and found time to score. HC Lee Stone on #18, “Wheels has consistently led by example for our program for 3 years including two championships. This weekend was just a small sample size of how incredible a hockey player and teammate Reid Wheeldon is."
